Dear Member of our 19-Person Team, Welcome to the Into Thin Air Book Club. I chose this book because it is one of the most exciting books I have ever read. Sure, it's a bit wordy at times and it's controversial (not everyone agrees with Krakauer's version of events), but it is captivating--I stayed up into the wee hours of the night a couple of days in a row to finish it. At one point I was reading on a plane and realized I was at about the same height above sea level as Everest's summit (29,028 feet/8849 metres above sea level)--it was amazing to think that a person could climb so high. Krakauer starts the book on the summit. We get a taste of what it's like to think without oxygen. We are told that people will die. We are told that every minute matters. It captured my attention and hopefully it will do the same for you. I know I'm looking forward to reading it for a third time. Sincerely, Mr. Riche, Team Leader.
