April 17 - Introductions
A note about the discussion on this site... Krakauer says the following about the importance of teamwork in mountain climbing: "In climbing, having confidence in your partners is no small concern. One climber's actions can affect the welfare of the entire team. The consequences of a poorly tied knot, a stumble, a dislodged rock, or some other careless deed are as likely to be felt by the perpetrator's colleagues as the perpetrator" (37-38). It's a bit cheap to claim that the exact same is true of this discussion--our lives are not at stake and no one is going to write a bestselling book about our discussion--but it is sort of true. If everyone does the reading and is fully engaged in the discussion, it could be a wonderful experience.
