If you've made it this far, you've learned about many of the famous early attempts on Everest, Sherpa society, and the make-up of Rob Hall's team and the other teams on the mountain in the Spring of 1996.
To the right, you'll see pictures of base camp, climbing the Khumbu Icefall (see the webisode on the "There's More to This Website" page as well), and of Rob Hall.
Hopefully, you're already caught up in the story. There is a great deal to talk about already and you'll see the format for us to do so below.
Talk to you soon, Mr. Riche.
Your tasks:
1. Do the following work on the forum:
(A) Respond to the "Krakauer's Writing Style" question in today's forum (B) Get into the "Everest Debate" (C) Provide more "Feedback About the Discussion"--filed under "Introduction/Home Base" forum from last time (D) Continue/Check in on last week's discussions about stress, adventure stories, taking risks, and memory now that you can support your discussion with details from the text (E) Post your own question in the "Miscellaneous" Forum
2) Twitter discussion using #intothinair -->(A) I would like you to share at least one powerful/significant line from this section of the book by tweeting it. Significant = well worded, an example of foreshadowing, about an interesting concept, suspenseful, an exploration of an important theme in the book, connects to everyday life -->(B) Retweet three other tweets on the twitterfeed that your book club teammates have tweeted--that sounds like a tongue twister -->(C) Any other incidental discussion about the lines can happen here, too. Just make sure you use the hashtag when you get into a discussion so that we can all follow -->(D) Throughout the week, contact me @richeben with any questions, comments, or concerns about the book. NOTE: If you haven't been using Twitter with your class, do more for our forum discussion during this time.
3) Check out this link (click here) for dispatches from the 2013 Adventure Consultants Everest trip. Today they are taking a rest at Base Camp after having returned from Camp 2 yesterday as part of their acclimatization. I thought you'd find it interesting that Rob Hall's company is still going and is on the mountain right now. This is one of the wonderful parts about reading Into Thin Air in May.
